Citius, Altius, Fortius

21 08 2008

I could be one of the most disinterested participants that I know in tracking the Beijing Olympics. I still remember the rapture with which my Mom watched the launch of Beijing Olympics when I played Solitaire in my room. Yet, the spirit of passion always lingers on those who come in touch with it. I couldn’t resist but cheer for Abhinav Bindra or catch up with the verve of the participants and their spirit to succeed against all odds.

For some, its a great example of the best of sporting spirit at display, whilst for some its just do or die. As we attempt and persist, so we excel. As we test the limits, so we bring out those incremental improvements that drive towards excellence. Some how the Olympics motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, Latin for ‘Swifter, Higher, Stronger’ makes perfect sense. Swifter than what we are currently, higher than what we can aim and stronger than what we think is possible. Testing the limits of endurance, and teaching that excellence is when we persist in besting ourselves with each attempt, whilst respecting the spirit of sportsmanship and sharing the joy with everyone around us. The spirit of participation shimmering over the highs of triumphs and the quagmires of losses. Such a powerful message packed in such small motto. Some how, it lingered.

“Bipasa basu offered Golden Date to Vijender Kumar, if he wins Gold medal in olympics” – News Sources.

Vijender feared about this lady and her date and lost the game.. -Gossip sources..

That was the joke following the bronze medal for vijender singh. He is the Real Hero of the time. son of a bus driver, a police conistable, representing a country itself is great. Winning a Medal is itself a Huge Victory.

He had shown the inner power and the strength of “WILL POWER” to every one by making his dream come true. Iam sure he is going to get his fruits and still he is not satisfied with bronze, that attracted me alot.

“Weather we won all games or not is the only criteria” this statement shows his desire to win, that flare in him speaks alot about the future shots.. which are going to be blown.. towards a destiny.

Abhinav said “Just be confident about us” “No Negative Sugessions”, still our -ve mindset media havnt changed. one says, “vijender Lost”, I say, he proved out of billion.

That’s interesting. I watched quite a bit of the Olympics (sans the opening and closing ceremonies) and I was not aware of the motto :-). May be I enjoy the event more than the spirit of the event :-). For me Olympics signify more of the athlete’s achievement over one’s limitations. Bon-homie and universal brotherhood and all those platitudes come secondary to me πŸ™‚

@ ctone
That’s beautifully put. Encouragement and mental training indeed matters. Cynical attitude and discouragement has this dangerous habit of destroying everything it interacts with.

@ Vamsi
Agreed,if you agree that those secondary things are also equally important. πŸ™‚ Thanks for that article. It does highlight some original ideas. πŸ™‚
